Why do people dumb the meaning of balance down to the literal number of force users? Anakin brought balance by killing the Jedi? What a joke. He didn't do jack shit in Order 66. Clone troopers did the work while he cut down younglings and a few jedi in the temple then some traders who couldn't help themself. If you believe that is what brings balance, then the credit must go to Darth Sidious as it was all planned by him. Darth Sidious is the chosen on in this theory.

To answer this question, you really have to define what balance is. If you think it is the number of Jedi vs Sith, then Order 66 still didn't bring balance. There was more survivors than just Obi-wan and Yoda. I like see the force almost as character in the Star Wars universe and not just a medium. For the force to be at balance, the force users must be at balance with themselves. If there are dark and light sides users, then the force is at conflict. Because Anakin and Vader are described as different characters, they are at conflict and therefore the force cannot be balanced. The same could apply to any character who has not faced both sides and has not decided what is true for him/her.

My perspective is Anakin brought balanced via his children as a medium to complete the prophesy. Luke had to face the dark side by facing his father at the end of Jedi. The outcome of Luke redeeming his father Anakin by helping him destroy both Vader and the Emperor left the only remaining force user a Jedi one who faced his dark and light side without losing himself. This results in the force being in a non conflicting state and therefore can be describe as true balance. The result should have made way for a Jedi who can use his experience to raise a new generation of Jedi who would not fall to the same conflict.

But of course Disney couldn't come up with any unique ideas and just re-created Vader: A whining bitch who can't get his shit together.

According to Lucas, Anakin is the Chosen One. His reasoning isn't very sound as to why, imo, but hey, it's his story.

Watch the "The Chosen One" special feature from Episode 3. Lucas plainly states that the prophecy is to destory the sith (and that brings balance to the force) and that Anakin fulfills that when he kills the Emperor and himself. It's SUPER clear from the framework of 1-6 and not 4-3 why Yoda has the line about it might being misread. It gives tension when the chosen one falls and becomes the bad guy. But in the end it turns out to be true after all.

Lucas has also stated on several occasions, that Jedi are like an extension of the force itself. The dark side corrupt the force by using it for their own gain. He compared it to cancer. The body is in balance when there is the absence of cancer cells but once they exist it throws the entire system out of balance. The Jedi being like white blood cells and working to keep the body as a whole functioning

With episode 7 I think disney mostly is ignoring the whole thing, or retconning what the prophecy means. After all they went to great lengths to show Snoke and Kylo are NOT "sith" per say but just Dark force users. That seems to be just semantics to not completely destroy the time line hahaha

    What is "the force" ?

"Well, the Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together."
    - Obi-Wan Kenobi

    Simple answer:
Anakin was the chosen one. His destiny was to bring balance to the force, which he did. Whether you perceive it as getting rid of the Jedi to balance light and dark, or killing the Sith to vanquish the darkness, he fulfilled that prophecy. This is strictly based on the movies, as the tv shows wanted to add depth and mystery to the saga, which is about Anakin.

    A bit more complex answer:
However, in the EU, there were many Sith as well as force users throughout the Galaxy. From the witches of Dathomir, to The Lost Tribe of Sith on Kesh, to the planet Zonama Sekot, and anyone else hiding out under a rock or in a cave... this would prove that prophecy unfullfilled, as light and dark would have still been in sync, or bouncing back and forth... however one chooses to see it.

Rather, Yoda would have been right about the prophecy being misinterpreted. Anakin was not THE chosen one. Instead, he was the first of the Chosen bloodline.

    Skywalker.

Anakin plays a key role in a number of times shaping the events in the galaxy. From his decision to save Palpatine thus leading to the downfall of the Jedi Order, to throwing the Emperor down reactor shaft. His actions were defining moments that created ripples throughout the galaxy.

Then comes Luke. After the Emperor and Vader died, Luke AND Leia go on to play a big part in the creation of the New Republic. Enter the Yuuzhan Vong. On the brink of total annihilation, who saves the day? Luke! Oh, and he has help: Jacen, Jaina, Anakin. All with the Skywalker blood flowing through them. The events from that story brings about Darth Caedus. He brings a bunch of war and death, pain and suffering, the usual stuff any Dark Lord would bring... but more importantly, releases Abeloth during his reign of terror (or his righteous crusade, depending on your point of view).

    Abeloth is something else entirely.....
Guess who's there to stop her?
    The Skywalkers!!!
This time it's Luke and Ben, with help from Jaina among other friends, (former and current) enemies.

This leads me to believe that it IS the Skywalkers who were chosen, starting with Anakin. Time and time again, they save the galaxy from foes that seek to bring total annihilation, or tip the scales too far in any direction (light or dark).
Death of all living things would mean death of the force.
The below passage contradicts this, but also go to show the Skywalker's path... because guess who's going to go on this holy crusade to find/become the ones? The Skywalkers of course.

"Luke concludes that with the galaxy slipping into darkness and Abeloth's return all too likely, the Jedi and the Sith must become the Ones in order to ensure the Balance of the Force." - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse

Note: I've read many of the books, not all, and have not read too many of the comics. The above is my opinion supported by wiki "facts".
